A flag retirement ceremony was held at 6:30 PM in the church
parking lot prior to tonight’s meeting.
The ceremony was conducted by the Junior Crosby High School ROTC,
several members of which were present.
The pledge of Allegiance was recited at the opening of the ceremony. The ritual was also attended by several
Engine 5 firefighters.
The meeting began at 7:15
PM: Mike opened by thanking the ROTC
and Fire Dept. for their assistance.
Mike also thanked all who
participated in the neighborhood cleanup.
In addition, Mike
acknowledged and thanked Bob Perigard, Larry Davino and Ned Mencio for hanging
all the neighborhood flags.
A meeting is scheduled for
tomorrow, Thursday, May 19th , of the scholarship committee to
finalize plans for the presentation at the June 15th meeting.
There will be a barbecue at
the June meeting --hot dogs,
hamburgers, rolls and soda to be provided by the Association. Members are asked to bring salads and
dessert. A sign up sheet was passed
with nine members promising to bring accompaniments.
The newsletter remains a
pending issue due to the inability to obtain enough ads to cover the cost. Several suggestions were made: Nancy Ptak
suggested a committee of five to be selected by Tony , the editor, to assist in
obtaining ads. Ned Mencio suggested
that ad purchasers receive discounts if they agree to purchase ads for three
issues. Nancy also suggested that the
paper be reduced in volume to a small newsletter, similar to those published by
the old East Mountain Community Club.
Nazih Noujaim voiced his encouragement to continue the newsletter, even
if only twice a year.
Father David announced a
blood drive to be held at the church on Wednesday, May 25th.
The Association sign is near
completion. The DOT must receive a
photo of the sign along with measurements and area for placement.
Some will be working on the
flag area tomorrow. This year a frame
will be placed around the bed prior to the planting. It will prevent erosion, maintain better and accurate placement
of flowers and look more symmetrical.
The frame is the brainchild of Bob Perigard with Ned Mencio’s help. They will need help from anyone who can be
there.
The saga of the park
renovations continues; the work has not begun at this time. Rumor has it that it will be started in late
June. This rumor joins all the other,
which so far have remained only rumors.
Fire Department issues: Open burning is not allowed in
Waterbury. Residents are warned not to
burn in open areas.
Police report: Joe Padua
relates that the East End burglar has been caught and confessed to 20
burglaries. That person is currently
residing at Bridgeport Correctional Center, awaiting court appearances.
Seat belts are now mandated
or offenders will be ticketed.
Nancy Ptak has 4 flag sets
available if anyone wants them. They
are not the same sets that have been placed in the neighborhood.
Last evening at the Wendell
Cross School there was a City Zoning change plan meeting. To share plans for changes that may someday
take place in the city. The presenter spoke about returning school to the K to
8 plan, increase of transportation parking possibilities, biking routes, the
use of lakes, walking trails along the Naugatuck River, improving the flow of
traffic and the encouragement of proactivity for the city. The entire plan is available on the web at www.psaplanning.com/waterburyplan.
The tree in front of the golf
course clubhouse is looking slightly unhealthy and may need the assistance of
an arborist.
The clubhouse is being reside
at the present time.
The treasurer’s report
reveals an available balance of $3, 941.54, after allowances for flags and the scholarship wee set aside. A full report is available upon request in
hard copy form.
The meeting was adjourned at
7:50 PM
Respectfully submitted
