The East Mountain Neighborhood Association
Wednesday, June 21, 2006
Attendance: 51
The meeting began at 6:21PM. Michael Ptak led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Mike apologized for not having hard copy of the Agenda, but said the meeting would be brief, since this evening is the annual scholarship presentation and barbecue.
There has been no further activity in terms of dirt biking on the site of the proposed condominiums. That is because the developer was taken to task for being non-compliant in that he was issued an order about 2 years ago to place topsoil in the area and plant grass seed, this after he spent many months having earth removed from the area and shipped elsewhere. Based on the zoning laws, the city issued the developer a cease and desist order, which forced him to stop allowing the dirt bikes to operate in the area.
Mike voiced thanks to all who worked on the flower flag, which after only a few days was almost completely washed away by the severe rains, which also inflicted a great deal of destruction on other parts of the area and the city. Some money has been donated to re-plant the flower garden. We need to decide what to do. A consensus was voiced that the flag should be re-planted. Suggestions were made to wait and see if we obtain enough money and enough flowers, or to use artificial flowers. Father David suggested placing a real flag at the site.
Park: Mike reports that a contract to renovate the park was signed by the mayor today. Work may start by August 1st. There will be ball fields and a walking path. Mike states he sent Jim Amman a letter, asking about getting more money. David Aldarando has been working toward obtaining more money, also.
Father David is leaving us to go to Springfield, Ma., having been re-assigned by his bishop. Father has allowed us the use of the church hall for three years, and let us use the hall for our breakfast fund raised free of charge. Father has been here for nine years and tells us that it is a blessing for him to be connected with us and that he enjoys the neighbors. Father was presented with beautiful cake decorated with a cross. Mike presented Father with a plaque in appreciation for his kindness to us.
Barbara Stere introduced this year’s scholarship recipient, Erin Mc Govern. Beverly Guevin, daughter of Harry Northrop, a late benefactor of the East Mountain Atheletic Association, presented the $500 to Erin. Erin proceeded to enlighten the attendees on some of her many accomplishments. She is joined by her sister and parents at the celebration.
The meeting was adjourned and the barbecue began. The attendees enjoyed hot dogs, hamburgers and many appetizers, side dishes desserts and beverages.
Respectfully submitted,
