The East Mountain
Neighborhood Association
April 16, 2008
The
president Patrick Norton started the meeting with the pledge of allegiance.
Nancy
Ptak gave the secretary’s report. She read a note card from Monica Keane
thanking us for supporting the fundraiser held on behalf of her children. The minutes were available on the website as
well.
Jean
Guisto gave the Treasurer’s report. A copy is available for review.
Our
guest speaker was Joe Geary the Director of Operations from the mayor’s office.
Also joining him was Dave Simpson, and Dan Lauer. Joe Geary is a past resident of East Mountain. He mentioned the update on our east mountain
park renovations. The bids were open on March 25,2008. There are sufficient funds for the phase 2
of the park including the entryway, basketball court, paving the walking path
and new fencing.
There
have been renovations to the east mountain golf course as well in the amount of
½ million dollars.
There
has been damage to the 18th hole that needs repair.
Paving
of streets was addressed for the other side of the mountain including all the
streets ending in Rock. (Piping Rock, Saddle Rock, Glen Rock etc) Lower Pearl Lake Road will see some paving
as well. There will be work done to widen the road as well.
Street
sweeping will occur by the middle of May. The street department requests that
piles of sand not be made. It is more difficult to pick up piles of sand. Maureen Meade asked about the curbs on
Piping Rock. Joe asked that she give
him her address and he would address any repair issues. Larry Davino asked about the netting around
the golf course. Turner offered a
suggestion that the nets be put on pulleys so they weather will not damadge the
nets in bad weather. Nancy Santarpia
wanted to know about the stones not sand that were used this year. Unfortunately sand is difficult to obtain.
Most towns are using salt or calcium phosphate instead and sand is scarce and
not of good quality. Dave Simpson said
our cost for sand this year was $200k more than anticipated.
Bob
Trotter commented on how wonderful it was to see the park being used
again. Even though the park is still
officially not completely done, it is being used.
Joe
Padua gave said 10 ATV users were apprehended.
A prowler complaint was called in on Edgewood Avenue in a white impala a
white male about 5’10” tall. Anyone who
looks suspicious in the neighborhood do not hesitate to contact Joe Padua at
the police station. June Galinas
complained about the speeding of cars on the corner of peach orchard road.
Dan
Lauer reported that the Waterbury Police apprehended the bank robber who shot
the fireman.
He also reminded us about Earth Day May 3rd,
2008. Anyone who would like to get
involved meet at the Church parking lot at 8:30 A.M. Gloves and bags will be provided. After the clean up Free
Frankies Crimestoppers will donate lunch.
Ned
Mencio gave an update on the June Neighborhood Award Dinner. Bill Klish has the
plaques ordered. We have decorating committee, Set Up, and clean Up committees.
Tony Loechner has printed tickets. The
dinner will only be successful if each and every one of us spread the word, ask
our neighbors to buy a ticket. This is
our first attempt at this kind of dinner.
The scholarship recipient, as well as four other people will be
honored. They include Mike Ptak (past
president). Jean Guisto (past vice president, and current Treasurer), Larry
Davino (flower waterer, hydrant painter and cleaner, storm drain cleaner etc.) as well as Terry Robilard from the east mountain
golf course who has helped in our fundraiser efforts as well as helped with
refreshments for our tree lighting ceremony every year. We need to reach the rest of the population
from the East Mountain area. It should
not always be the few volunteers who do all the work. All who live in the East
Mountain area need to support this event in order for it to be successful. The dinner will be held on Wednesday evening
at 6:30 PM at Our Lady of Lebanon Church Hall.
The cost is $ 15.00 per person. Children under 10 $ 5.00. Contact Patricia Mencio for tickets. There was discussion about advertising on
the City Website (Joe Geary); Channel 16(Margaret Rocco) WATR (Bob McGovern) A
sign will be put up along the fence on East Mountain Road (Ceil Perigard). To spark
interest from the East Mountain Golf Association, Turner Langdon will be the
contact from that group. We also
discussed whether an ad should be put in the newspaper. A motion was made by Tim Connolly to spend $
125.00 for advertising. Turner Langdon seconded the motion. A vote was taken and the motion
carried. Tony Loechner will make
posters to post at Stop and Shop, Peoples Bank, Naugatuck Savings Bank, and at
Dairy Mart. Ticket sales must be in by
the 3rd Wednesday in May.
It
was decided that regardless of the number of sales, the event would still be
held.
Michael
Ptak gave and update on the Condo opposition.
Patrick Zailkas has not returned phone calls relative to the
appeal. Tim Connolly has agreed to be
an intervener. There was $1,000.00
retainer sent to Attorney Zailkas. It
was suggested the secretary draft a letter to Attorney Zailkas to express our
concerns. He has been involved in a
trial recently, so he has been very busy.
Robert
Perigard did some research on our new sign for the park. It was decided that the sign would cost
about $ 1,500.00. It will be part
engraved and part painted. It will have a flag going through the middle of it. Since Bob Perigard was unavailable, Michael
Ptak gave the report as well as signs will be posted relative to “dog posts”
and “keep our park clean “signs. The
cost could be taken from the grant funds the Waterbury Development Corporation
has.
Ned
Mencio brought up about the flagpole.
He will find out from the Naugatuck Savings Bank the size and whether
they will provide the funding for the pole.
Once it is purchased, it can be stored at Robert Perigard's
warehouse.
Don
Rinaldi gave a brief talk about the litter and beautifications adopt a spot
program.
We
already have a flag of flowers with a sign posted.
Nancy
Ptak gave an update on the bricks. A
call was made to Mr. O’ Donnell for the update. He has not yet returned our
call. There is one more order that
needs to be submitted.
Ned
Mencio made a motion to adjourn and Bill Burnes seconded the motion.
