Total Attendance 36

April 15, 2009

The pledge was led by our president Patrick Norton.

The boy scouts of Troup 41 gave a brief talk about a trip to a New Mexico.  To help defray the cost of their trip, the scouts are sponsoring a bottle and can drive from now until May 30th.  They will be happy to pick the cans up if you call 217-7057.  Bottle and cans can also be dropped off at Our Lady of Mount Carmel church on May 30th from  8:00 am to 3:00 pm.

Next we had Mike Kennedy speak from Total Tree Care in Cheshire. He spoke about tree cutting, ground fertilizing, and insect problems.  Larry Davino asked a question about mulch. It should be about 2 or 3 inches up to the drip line (where the branches hang down).  Patrick Norton raised a question about pruning rhododendrons. Hand pruning is best.  Tony asked when pruning should take place.  After the blossoms bloom.  Sally McGovern asked how to handle lilac bushes.  Also fruit trees should be pruned while dormant.  After the sap flows is not as messy. Maybe in February.

The secretary’s report was given by Nancy Ptak.  A sympathy card will be sent to June Laugalis.  A thank you letter was received by the Waterbury Republican American for our donation to the campership fund.

Jean made a motion to enter the minutes into the record and Mike Ptak seconded the motion.

The treasurer’s report was given by Jean Guisto.  We have an approx balance of 8,000.00 we had a profit of approximately $ 350.00 from the casino trip.  We still have some expenses for the bricks as well as the scholarship fund.  Other expense includes the flags and the flowers for the dam.  Nancy Ptak made a motion to accept the treasurer’s report into the record and Larry Davino seconded the motion.

Next came discussion about the park reopening.  Mike Ptak said he will discuss details with Joe Geary and Jim Nemic around the first week of May.  The concrete pads are installed.  The bubbler is installed.  The fencing will be in next week.  The sign will be installed but covered to prevent vandalism.   A motion was raised to allow expenses for a band, 4 fife and drum players, and two more portolets with washing stations. The group felt that if we do not book someone soon, we will be left with no one.  Bob Perigard felt the price was too steep.  Patricia Mencio felt since Turner has had countless discussion with Rich Grishka’s band we should hire him.  Nancy Ptak agreed with  Patricia Mencio.   Mike Ptak restated his motion to spend funds to cover both the band and fife and drum.  Tony seconded the motion.  Motion carried.   Comments were past to Mike Ptak and Turner Langdon about how WDC funds are to be disbursed.  It seems every political figure would like to take credit for the funds coming to our park. (Jeff Berger, David Aldorando and others) It seems Tom Conway did the majority of the work to secure these funds.

The police report was given by Joe Padua.  Burglaries have been done on Lombard Plaza, Norris Street, National Avenue, and downtown. Hispanic male with black jacket and jeans and a white male with numbers tattooed on his neck were spotted.  Jean Guisto addressed some issues from Mohawk Neighborhood meeting had some break ins closer to East Mountain and posed the question why we did not hear about these closer to our neighborhood.

Larry Davino announced the results of the recognition awards meeting.  It was decided that the dinner take place in October of 2009 instead of at the park reopening.  The awardees are:  Jan Perigard, Bill Burnes, and Joe Padua.  In June, the scholarship award will be presented.  Since we have a lot of events this year we will not have a pancake breakfast fundraiser.

Earth Day clean up is scheduled for May 16, 2009.  Anyone interested can meet at the dam at 9:00 am.

More loom is needed for the flower flag by the middle of May.  Jean Guisto will have someone take care of that.

The DUCKS have arrived.  Tickets are on sale for $5.00 per ticket 50 prizes will be awarded.  Top prize is a trip for four to DISNEYWORLD.  Contact Nancy Ptak for Tickets at 754-9311.

On April 30, 2009 there will be a meeting at Kennedy High School about the Greenway Project.  This will connect a walking path from the City of Waterbury along the Naugatuck River that spreads over 7 miles for cyclists, walkers and runners.

The meeting was adjourned by Bob Perigard and seconded by Larry Davino.
